Saturday - how fabulous?...best laid plans

White tents, flowing champagne, gourmet food - that is what my Saturday was supposed to look like - chilling out at the Denver Polo Classic in Littleton. And it was a gorgeous day. Absolutely ideal for lounging and eating and champagne-ing outside. So what happened? Well, one of my fur-babies who NEVER gets sick, woke up sick. She was lethargic, panting and seemingly in pain, so I spent my beautiful Saturday morning...at the vet. How posh. And after we headed home - her with a fever and me with her antibiotics and a big fat vet bill in hand - I just couldn't bring myself to leave her unattended to go party at the polo fields. Boo. So I stayed home and cuddled with her because she is the type who, even on a good day, always prefers cuddles over anything (food included). I suspected that it would make us both feel better. And it did, she already seems to be on the mend. Denver Polo Classic - I'll just have to see you next year!

working on my fitness

So I may have mentioned that I'm back at working hard on my fitness. Ugh, ok, that's my "cute" way of saying I'm trying to lose weight. There, I admitted it. Let's blame it in part on having a desk job. Anyway, I was sick for over a month and needless to say, that majorly derailed my plans! I got in a workout here or there over the last couple of weeks, but this week I've made it a top priority to stick to a regular schedule. As you can imagine, the adjustment to working out again has been painful - I've got a lot of ground to recover. But I am super motivated...this is important to me because, well...on a superficial level - I find it more fun to play with fashion when I'm slimmer and fitter (note: I did not say skinny). Plus I've got a handful of goals (and some secret projects, deets to come later) that would require me to be in a certain kind of shape and this blog is supposed to be all about me doing what I want to do with my life, so here I go. So thanks lovelies for the extra motivation and accountability ;).

I've got a lot coming up on the social calendar over the next several months and I want to be ready! I've had too many moments over the last year where I thought, next time I'll be better prepared. Well, I'm having no more of that nonsense. To start, I'm doing Pilates 3-4 days a week, Jillian Michaels 30 day shred, some extra cardio (I choose from elliptical, kickboxing or dance workouts) and I would love to throw regular yoga in there as well. Some of my yoga options have a cardio effect, so some days I'll skip the pure cardio for the cardio challenging yoga. On days where I'm particularly well organized and energetic, I guess I'll be working out for around 2 hours which sounds bananas, but my main goal is to be consistent and to remember that something is better than nothing and to simply DO SOMETHING every day. So my bare minimum even for busy or lazy days is 20-30 minutes. The schedule for the 30 day shred (30 mins) is 6 days on, 1 day rest, so that's my main focus for the next month. I have a 20 minute Pilates mat workout and a few 20-30 minute yoga videos so I really have no excuses here. I just have to remember to not beat myself up if that's all I do on a day. I tend to be an all or nothing type personality so this will be one of my biggest challenges.

Btw, one of the upcoming happenings is a swimsuit-required vacation. Seriously, it's the type of thing where I'd look ridiculous not being in a swimsuit. So if all else fails, I can use swimsuit fear to power me through my workouts ;)

shopping for real life

I have a confession to make. I have a lovely collection of high heels and most pairs have never been worn. Why? Well, I like to be comfortable and I like to walk fast (I am a native New Yorker, after all), so I tend to reach for flats, boots, wedges, heck - even flip flops before I slip on my stilettos. But this has always been my preference so why on earth did I ever stock up on high heels and er, Louboutins, no less? Well, to be fair, they are Louboutins and, as such, are hard to resist for a fashion lover. Even as I write this I have 3 pairs on my wish list. No, I'm not proud of myself but they're just too pretty to resist! Is there a rehab for shoe lovers?

Well while I have made more of an effort lately to get used to wearing heels and wearing my pretty but uncomfortable shoes more often, I do wonder what made me spend good money on these things knowing that I would barely use them. And if I'm really honest about it, I was buying more than just the pretty shoes themselves. I was also buying the kinds of things I pictured myself being able to do if I had the shoes. It was as if I thought that having amazing shoes would make me more likely to go to amazing places and parties and meet amazing, fashionable people who would love me because I too belonged to the amazing shoe owner club. Oh my gosh that sounds so silly, but...it's true. I was shopping for a fantasy life and I'd bet that quite a few of us have done that from time to time. But in my case, when I really considered what was going on, I realized that this fantasy life was one which I did want to make a reality some way. So I took this as a hint that I needed to make a few changes. Yes, I am actually telling you that when I realized I was buying fancy shoes with no where to wear them, I decided that my life needed to change rather than my misguided purchases. Here's the thing, I have always loved fashion and designer things. I've always preferred to check out cool new restaurants or museums, go to parties and lounges with amazing cocktails and people watching. So why the heck was I not indulging in any of that?!?! Why was I spending my days in a way where a grocery run to the Super Walmart was the grandest thing on the agenda? With that in mind, I knew I had to make a change. And that's what I'm working on now.

But what about you? Do you shop for a fantasy life or do you shop for your reality? Don't be afraid to really consider this because there are so many ways to make your life more glamorous or adventurous or whatever you want without having to rebuild it from the ground up.

On to the fun stuff...here are the current pairs on my wish list:

Louboutin Bianca, I'm kind of obsessed with these shoes. I had them in kid leather once but they were sent to me damaged so I had them for only a day before they went back. I love them in black (kid vs patent?) and this nude! 120mm all the way and with the platform they're actually very comfortable.

Another pair of Louboutin and these are too beautiful for words. But at $2,795, I'll need a sugar daddy hook up to be able to add these to my wardrobe. Artifice 100mm Strass.

I need a pair of Loubi spikes and this pair of nude Yolandas are super sexy. I love that the spikes and leather are tone on tone instead of the usual super blingy contrast. My only concern is that Louboutin peep toes tend to be uncomfortable for me.

lucky girl

Yes, I hate my job but let me look at the bright side for a minute. I'm a lucky girl in that I only work 4 days a week (10 hours a day), which means I get 3 days off. The plan for today is to run a bunch of errands and then work on my fitness! I was sick for the last month and when I'm sick I tend to lay in bed and only have an appetite for Chinese food. That means I'm probably the only woman on the planet to actually gain weight when she's sick. Squish city, but that's ok, I'm back on it. It's how many times you get back up that matters, right?

So I recently decided to declutter my closet and get rid of (first by trying to sell, then donating) items that I don't wear anymore or bought and never wore. I made great money at my last job and indulged quite a bit in my favorite designer fashion items - shoes and handbags, which I'm sure you'll see quite a bit on this blog. Well I did great for the most part in choosing items that I still love seasons later, but a few pieces were a bit of a miss. This round was all Bottega Veneta and they're gorgeous, but just not for me. I'm hoping to sell and put the money towards a few new things I have my eye on, more on those pieces later...

Bottega Veneta pumps. The color, silicone design on the heel and chain accents are what got me! Actually still debating on these...wonder if I can rock them with a dressier jeans look?

Brogue heels, also Bottega Veneta. I had a serious BV shoe obsession for a few years, and then they changed their shoe designer (phew!). These were a sale find (as were the others). Kind of still debating on these too, because they are so gorgeous and well made, but the style really isn't "me".

BV flats - consign.JPG

BV flats are classic. These are different than their usual offerings in that they are not woven and are a colorblocked design. I'm not into the square toe any more and I'm always iffy with red, even as an accent. It's such a hard color for me to wear.

I nearly lost my mind when I saw these for the first time. The combo of the crackled patent leather on the straps and the beautiful leather flowers stopped me right in my tracks. But somehow, I never wore them. I guess they weren't that easy for me to work into my wardrobe. I'm not much into brown, so I guess that's why.
